The City of Morro Bay Water Division is committed to delivering safe, reliable drinking water, sustaining adequate fire-protection capacity, and ensuring timely, cost-effective system maintenance and upgrades.

About the Water Division

The Water Division has approximately 5,800 water meters, 10 water storage tanks, 7 active groundwater wells and a Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis plant. 

Our Staff

Our Water Division team consists of certified operators with expertise in treatment and distribution. We continually pursue the best practices to ensure you receive high‑quality drinking water that meets all state and federal standards. Our commitment extends to protecting water sources, encouraging conservation, supporting community education, and meeting the needs of everyone we serve.

Our Sources

The City of Morro Bay’s primary water source is surface water from the State Water Project, administered locally by the Central Coast Water Authority (http://www.ccwa.com). The water is treated at the Polonio Pass water treatment plant, which is near the junction of Highways 41 and 46, and then pumped to Morro Bay. This water is treated with chloramines to disinfect the water. The State Water supply is augmented by groundwater wells located near Lila Keiser Park (Morro Basin). The water from Morro Basin has high nitrate levels and therefore requires treatment before distribution.

Our Treatment

Water with high Nitrate levels from our wells is treated at the brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) facility or blended with water from the State Water Project to lower the Nitrate concentration below the State Maximum Contamination Level (MCL).
