Recreation Services is committed to providing quality recreational programming and opportunities in a responsive and courteous manner. Enhancing the quality of life, building a sense of community, providing positive role models to children and youth, improving self-esteem, and contributing to the health and safety of all residents and visitors is the top priority. The Recreation Services is comprised of the following areas serving the Estero Bay Communities:

Administration

Administration supports all areas with numerous reports, billing, budgeting, personal, and clerical duties. Along with support duties, Administration coordinates activity classes and affiliated clubs. Administration also oversees the online registration program, manages office functions, and processes all City permits, including, film, facility, and park reservations.

Recreational Sports

Recreational Sports provides adult and youth sports leagues along with tournaments, the Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier Run Marathon, Pool Programs at the MBHS Aquatics Center and the Junior Lifeguard program. Recreational Sports also works with youth and adult sports advisory boards to provide All-Star opportunities for some youth sports leagues. Our youth sports programs would not be possible without the support of our volunteers and sponsors. If you are interested in volunteering to coach, be a committee member, or sponsoring a team, please let us know. You can make the difference in the life of a child.  

Youth Services

Youth Services meets the needs and interests of elementary, middle and high school students. Youth Services provides a before and after school enrichment program for Del Mar Elementary students, licensed by the State of California. Youth Services also operates Rockies - the home of the Morro Bay Teen Center and Skate Park. During the summer, Youth Services also coordinates City Sponsored Special Events as well as a summer day camp program for children entering transitional kindergarten through sixth grades.

Senior Services


Morro Bay Senior Citizens, Inc., operating under the name Morro Bay Active Adults... 55+, is a local group that provides a wide variety of services to seniors in our community. The organization's all-volunteer staff operates the Morro Bay Senior Center and serves as a resource for adults age 55 and older. The Morro Bay Senior Citizen's, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.


Ongoing Service Objectives

Management Functions


Overall management functions associated with providing recreation and parks services to the Estero Bay Community include:
  • Long-range planning, reception and clerical support for the Department and full/part-time staff.
  • Technical support and professional staff support to the City CouncilRecreation and Parks Commission, and other groups.
  • Continued pursuit of Departmental efficiency and streamlining to promote timely response to clients.
  • Individual, as well as, team sports in the form of leagues, tournaments, classes, coached programs, special sports camps, and competitive drop-in programs to both youth and adults throughout the Estero Bay community.
  • Extensive summer Junior Lifeguard Program that is designed to increase the participant's appreciation and understanding of the recreational opportunities and hazards associated with the ocean environment.
  • Facilities and special events that draw individuals/groups to Morro Bay.
  • Adequate staffing levels for the operation of the Veterans' Memorial Building and the Morro Bay Community Center.
  • Rentals, reservations, and responsive service to the community for special events, programs, and projects.
  • School-age care and enrichment programs in concordance with the San Luis Coastal Unified School District calendar.
  • Operation of Rockies - the home of the Teen Center and Skate Park. Provide programming to fit the needs of local middle and high school students.
  • Coordinate with the Morro Bay Senior Citizen's, Inc. to provide operational hours of the Morro Bay Senior Center along with senior enrichment activities and services.
  • Work with the Recreation and Parks Commission to develop and enhance recreational opportunities, parks, and facilities.
  • Provide professional agency memberships and professional development to the Commission Members through county and state-wide training.
